NSB confirms the arrest of mainland spy who targeted secret military informationBy Joseph Yeh,The China Post December 5, 2014, 12:00 am TWN TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's top intelligence agency yesterday confirmed that it has arrested a Chinese individual who allegedly works as a spy for the mainland government, targeting Taiwan's confidential military information.
In response to lawmakers' questions, NSB Deputy Secretary-General Wang Der-lin (王德麟) made the confirmation during an interpellation session in the Legislative Yuan in Taipei yesterday. This is reportedly the first time the NSB has openly confirmed that it has arrested a Chinese spy. Wang did not disclose the identity of the spy, when and where the arrest was made or more detailed information on the espionage case, citing an ongoing investigation. According to local media reports, the individual has been identified as Zhen Xiaojiang (鎮小江). Formerly holding a senior post in the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Zhen is believed to now work for China's intelligence agency and to be stationed in Xiamen in China's Fujian province. Asked to comment, Wang said the bureau has been closely monitoring the case with the ultimate purpose of apprehending the Chinese suspect. Zhen is believed to be the man who allegedly recruited several active and retired Taiwanese military personnel to join a Chinese espionage network. One of the suspects that allegedly worked as a spy for Zhen is retired one-star-general Hsu Nai-chuan (許乃權), an independent candidate who ran unsuccessfully for Kinmen County magistrate on Saturday in the nation-wide elections. Hsu was taken in for questioning on Monday after law enforcement agents raided his home and campaign office over alleged links to the Chinese espionage ring. He is currently under detention. The retired major general, however, denied being involved in any espionage activities. During his service in the military, Hsu was previously stationed on Kinmen and Matsu. After retiring from the military in 2007, he was appointed head of the Kinmen County Government's Social Affairs Bureau. |
