DPP is to have picnics to celebrate its anniversary

TAIPEI -- The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will organize a series of picnics around Taiwan Sept. 28 to celebrate its 28th anniversary, DPP Secretary-General Hung Yao-fu said Tuesday.

This year, his party will not hold big election campaign activities to mark the founding anniversary as it has done in the past when elections were approaching, Hung said.

"Recently, there have been too many disasters in Taiwan. People are depressed," he said, adding that to shake off the gloom, the DPP came up with the idea of holding picnics around the nation, inviting people to bring their children and their pets to parks, to "spend some warm time along with the DPP."

Hung explained that the picnic culture emerged after the French Revolution of 1789-1799, when royal parks were opened to the public, allowing people to picnic on the lawns once reserved exclusively for royalty, reflecting a society beginning to embrace democracy, openness and freedom, he said.
