TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A woman from the Philippines yesterday killed herself and her young daughter after discovering that her Taiwanese husband of nearly 10 years was having an affair with a 22-year-old woman in China.
The Taoyuan County Police Bureau yesterday received a call that reported a suicide in Dayuan Township, Taoyuan, claiming that a mother and two children were burning coal inside a house.
According to police, the Filipino woman sent a text message to a friend at around 4 a.m., started burning coal in her bathroom and hanged herself after writing a note to her husband. She was later discovered by her 7-year-old son, who had gotten out of bed to go to the bathroom and called the neighbors for help. The woman, named Glenda, 38, had also shut her 4-year-old daughter in the bathroom with her. The little girl was dead by the time she was rushed to the hospital.
The woman had come to Taiwan for work and had fallen in love with her husband, who was nine years her senior. Surnamed Jiang, the 47-year-old husband worked in China most of the time and recently began dating a much younger woman. Hoping that she would regain her husband's affections after he saw their children, Glenda took her son and daughter with her on a visit to China, but her husband did not change his mind, said police.
In the woman's letter, she cited her reasons for taking her own life as she "can't continue to live (her) life knowing that you have a girlfriend there in China."
"You know yourself that you like her very much even if she's only 22 years-old and you are 47 ... I can't take all the pain and heartache anymore," the letter read.
The woman bid her husband goodbye and apologized "for everything," also asking him to apply for several copies of her certificate of death in English for her family to use back in the Philippines, adding a smiley-face at the end of her request.
"Glenda kept using the word 'we' in the letter, it seemed like she was planning to take the lives of both her children as well, and she was very determined," said Taoyuan police, who have alerted her husband of her death.
Glenda's affection for her husband was made obvious in her last words, said police.
