TSMC holds camp while rebuilding Kaohsiung

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) is holding a charity summer camp titled "Love, Hope and Rebuild" from Aug. 25 to 27 for children who went through the Kaohsiung gas explosions.

The leader of TSMC's volunteer organization, Zhang Shu-fen (張淑芬), who is the wife of Morris Chang (張忠謀), TSMC founder and chairman, said that TSMC had already repaired 296 residences that were damaged in the gas explosions and is also working on road reconstruction.

Zhang came up with the summer camp idea after visiting gas explosion victims. Zhang wishes to bring these children out of the atmosphere of destruction and despair, and to let them have fun in Northern Taiwan. TSMC will pay all the costs.

The opening ceremony of the summer camp took place at the Children's Art Education Center (兒童藝術教育中心), which was founded this April by TSMC and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (台北市立美術館). Zhang also gave every child three set of clothes for the days ahead.

Zhang said that after the gas explosions, TSMC immediately raised NT$6 million within the company in 24 hours, and then raised more than NT$15 million in one week.

As of Aug. 5, TSMC has finished restoring 296 residences, 2,076 meters of road reconstruction and 984 meters of fences. Zhang said that TSMC is only performing basic work on the road, and upon completion, the government will take over the construction.
