Likely fewer typhoons this year: CWB

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- According to statistics from the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), the average number of typhoons forming in the northwestern Pacific Ocean area was 5.6 in August in the past. No typhoons formed in the area this year.

August is normally the month in which most typhoons form over the Pacific Ocean. However, this year there has only been one typhoon — no.13, Genevieve, formed in the east Pacific. In addition, no typhoons have formed in the northwestern Pacific in August. This is the first year since 1958, when the typhoon alert system started, that there were not at least two typhoons forming in the same area in August.

Originally, the CWB forecast that there would be 29 to 30 typhoons forming over the northwestern Pacific Ocean in 2014, which is more than the average number of 25.7 from the past. The CWB also said there might be three to five typhoons hitting Taiwan before the typhoon season ends this year. The forecast, of course, turned out to be inaccurate.

The CWB's chief meteorologist Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典) stated that the number of typhoons this year has fallen short of expectations. Still, citizens should keep in mind that there can still be typhoons in September and October.

Cheng also pointed out that the summer monsoon season in India was weaker this year and only affected areas near the Bay of Bengal. As a result, the high pressure area expanded to tropical areas, making it harder for typhoons to form.

CWB pointed out that as the Pacific High still affects Taiwan in the coming days, the temperature will be still high. The temperature during the day will be around 33 to 36 Celsius Degree. It may also reach 36 Celsius Degree around the Northern Taiwan. In addition, afternoon thunderstorms are expected around the mountain areas, Central and Southern Taiwan.

CWB reminded citizens to have proper sun protection when going out and take in enough water during the heat.
