Canada wins Jones Cup women's basketball event

TAIPEI -- Canada beat the United States 80-56 Sunday in the final of the women's event in the William Jones Cup 2014 basketball tournament, which was hosted by Taiwan.

Canada won all five of its games in the contest held in Taipei Aug. 20-24, with a win over Taiwan by a close margin of 73-70 a day earlier.

Commenting on the event, Fabian McKenzie, chief coach of the Canadian team, said the experience the players got in the Jones Cup will serve Canada well in the 2020 Olympic Games.

His team experienced their Asian counterparts' fastball style during the Taipei tournament, an experience he believes will be helpful in Canada's efforts on the world stage, McKenzie said.

The Canadian coach expressed thanks to the organizer and said he felt great during his stay in Taiwan, a place he said he will visit again if given the chance.

A total of six teams from five countries — the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — attended the Jones Cup women's event.

It was the first time Canada had participated in the tournament for 10 years.
