TAIPEI--Social losses as a result of traffic accidents totaled NT$474.8 billion (US$15.84 billion) in 2013, according to an estimate by the Institute of Transportation under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

The figure, which is calculated based on 1,928 traffic-related deaths and 375,568 injuries recorded in that year, accounted for 3.3 percent of the country's gross domestic product for that year, the institute said. The figure does not include air traffic deaths.
