Most Taiwanese unaware of underground pipelines

TAIPEI -- Most people in Taiwan have no idea where the underground petrochemical pipelines run throughout the country but many have been taking an interest since a series of deadly gas explosions ripped through Kaohsiung last month, according to a recent poll.

The survey by Taiwan Realty Co. found that while nearly 90 percent of Taiwan residents do not know where the underground pipelines are located, 60 percent intend to pay greater attention in case they have to buy property.

The use and location of underground petrochemical pipelines is source of worry for 75 percent of the people in Taiwan, according to the poll. The gas explosions on July 31 in Kaohsiung killed 30 people and injured over 300 injured, in the worst accident of its kind in Taiwan's history. The blasts are believed to have been caused by a leak in an underground pipeline carrying propylene.

The online survey by one of Taiwan's biggest real estate agencies was conducted Aug. 4-8, with 1,069 valid samples. Taiwan Realty did not disclose the margin of error or confidence level.
