Taiwanese, Japanese university students meet to talk about the future

TAIPEI--University students from Taiwan and Japan are discussing a wide range of issues that will have a major impact on the two countries' futures during a week-long conference in Taipei that ends Aug. 22.

A total of 89 students are participating in the annual event aimed at promoting exchanges between the two countries, said the meeting's organizer, the Taiwan Japan Student Conference under National Taiwan University on Sunday.

In its ninth year, the gathering this year will focus on environmental, educational, economic and social issues, the organizers said.

Discussion topics include the development of the sex industry, the contamination of nuclear power plants and Taiwan's free economic pilot zones, it said.

The conference is aimed at encouraging Taiwanese and Japanese students to share perspectives and experiences from their own country and discuss issues related to future development, the organizers said.

Participating universities this year include Taiwanese schools National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University and National Chengchi University and Japanese schools Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Ochanomizu University, Kansai University and Akita International University.

The Japanese students will also have an opportunity to visit the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan County and the Hakka Museum to learn more about traditional Taiwanese culture, according to the organizers.

Initiated by the Taiwan Japan Student Conference in 2006, the annual conference is aimed at promoting exchanges between students from Taiwan and Japan to increase their understanding of each other's country. Taiwan and Japan take turns hosting the event every year.
