More than 1,000 people affected by signal malfunctions: THSR

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More than 1,000 travelers were affected by unresolved problems on the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) yesterday morning at Chiayi station, according to the THSR.

Abnormalities on switch lever signals for northbound routes at Chiayi station halted two northbound trains and one southbound train temporarily, said the THSR.

The problems, which have occurred at least a dozen times in the last few months, have resulted in a great many complaints from THSR passengers.

The THSR stated that the Operation Control Center sent out maintenance workers shortly after receiving information on switch lever abnormalities. Three trains passed Chiayi Station at a relatively low speed for safety reasons, which caused 15 to 20 minutes delay.

THSR should use closure times to conduct a thorough examination of equipment and replace defective parts at once, said Li Ker-tsung (李克聰), associate professor in the Department of Traffic and Transportation Engineering and Management at Feng Chia University.

The Bureau of High Speed Rail (BHSR) responded that maintenance of THSR took place last night; results of the maintenance work will be explained to BHSR at today's meeting.

In addition, passengers voiced concerns over switch lever issues, questioning the effectiveness of THSR as the same problem happened as recently as July 31 at Chiayi station, causing travel issues for commuters and travelers.
