Taoyuan airport to boost security after trespassing

TAIPEI -- Authorities overseeing Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the country's main gateway, said yesterday that they will introduce tighter security measures following an Aug. 1 trespass blamed on negligent airport staff.

A Vietnamese traveler planning to fly home reportedly managed to make his way onto the apron after passing through immigration and following a duty-free store staff member into a restricted area.

He was found by security personnel and taken to the police. He was later released without charge and put onto another flight to Vietnam, the Taoyuan International Airport Corp. said.

The airport said it has instructed duty-free shops to improve security training for their employees to prevent similar events from happening again.

Security control at the airport was last brought to public attention in 2011, when a woman sneaked into a restricted zone through a collapsed fence.
