Acceptance rate for Taiwan universities reaches record high

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The university acceptance rate has achieved 95.73 percent this year, reaching record levels over the past five years, according to the 2014 university placement results that were released yesterday.

At the current rate, a total of 52,608 students have been admitted to universities in the placement program based on their performance in the university entrance exam. However, there are still 11 universities, including 28 departments, which could not fulfill their planned student numbers based on the placement program.

Among these schools, University of Kang Ning (康寧大學) and Ming Dao University (明道大學) had the highest number of student shortages as the schools were lacking 196 and 83 students, respectively. In addition, the lowest acceptance grade appeared at University of Kang Ning, at which a student may be admitted by the Department of Digital Applications with a grade of 109.

Zhan Qian-deng (詹錢登), chief of the placement group of University Admission Committee (UAC, 大學考試入學分發委員會), said that departments that lack students mostly focus on subjects such as music and fashion. It should be noted that these departments have relatively lower registrations rates in the first place. In addition, he also said the fact that fewer students are able to fulfill the special requirements for entering these departments may be another reason.

Impact of Trend of Fewer Children

As for the two schools with the lowest number of student registrations, Zhan said it does not mean these two universities are academic underperformers. The shortage may be mainly the result of the trend of families having fewer children. The locations of these schools may also be a factor. He said that these two universities may fill the vacancies through a transfer system in the future.

According to the UAC, every student can register for 100 departments that they might wish to enter. UAC statistics show that the average number of departments registered for application by each student was 54 this year.

The UAC pointed out that the lowest registration grade for a social sciences major is 57, though it only combines the grades from Chinese, English and Math II. The lowest registration grade is 94 for science and engineering majors with five subjects of Chinese, English, Math, Physics and Chemistry. For biology and medicine majors, the lowest registration grade is 118.
