Ex-VP Lu 'disappointed' over ruling on Nuke 4 referendum

Former Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) yesterday noted her disappointment yesterday over the Taipei High Administrative Court's ruling against her in a lawsuit concerning her determination to stop the installation of fuel rods in the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant.
Lu's initial proposal to initiate a local referendum regarding the plant was first rejected by the Executive Yuan's Referendum Review Committee last May, but the former vice president then filed a provisional injunction this January.
In 2012, the New Taipei City Council passed a New Taipei referendum regulation that prompted Lu to propose the prevention of installing fuel rods at Nuke 4, also launching a petition to collect more than 50,000 signatures to endorse the proposal. Although the proposal was unanimously passed by the New Taipei Referendum Review Committee, it was later rejected by a referendum review committee in the Executive Yuan.
Lu appealed to the Executive Yuan without success, prompting her to file the suit with the Taipei High Administrative Court.
The Taipei High Administrative Court yesterday stated that the Nuke 4 referendum should be determined by all Taiwanese citizens as the issue concerns the entire nation, to which Lu said that she was "very disappointed with the verdict."
While Kaohsiung is suffering because of the country's developing petrochemical industry, its citizens are unable to do anything as they lack understanding of the city's gas pipeline safety, said Lu. "What if there is a nuclear explosion, something that is even more horrible than propene explosions? The lives and properties of 7.47 million people in Northern Taiwan will be demolished, and half of Taiwan reduced to ruins ... how can we talk about economic developments and power policies?" demanded Lu.
Lu also slammed the court for being "cold-blooded," stating her plans of proposing an amendment of referendum-related laws.
