CIB escorts 42 fraud ring suspects back to Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) yesterday morning escorted 42 Taiwanese suspects back to Taiwan from the Philippines over their alleged involvement in an international online fraud ring.

The CIB said it teamed up with the Philippine police six months ago, noting that it collected intelligence on the fraud ring, after which the Philippine police arrested 44 suspects, including 42 Taiwanese and two Chinese suspects in the central Iloilo province of the Philippines on July 9.

The bureau went on to say that the investigators discovered that the fraud ring chose to live on a remote island in the Philippines and carried out phone scams from the island. The CIB added that "it was like they were having a holiday on the island."

According to the investigation, the fraud ring allegedly blackmailed victims in China and Taiwan by deceiving them into believing that their bank accounts had been used by money launderers or terrorists.

The Philippine police officers escorted the suspects to Manila on the night of July 10 and detained them at police headquarters, the CIB said, noting that the Taiwanese representatives to the Philippines had visited the 42 Taiwanese suspects several times during their detention to ensure their basic human rights.

Taiwan police said that due to the efforts of the Taiwanese representatives in the Philippines, the Philippines' immigration agency completed the administrative work of repatriation within three weeks.

The 42 suspects, male and female, were identified by police officers upon their arrival at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport yesterday morning, the CIB said.

The CIB said given that the Taiwanese and the Philippines authorities have been working on busting the Philippines-based fraud ring, the bureau discovered that many crime rings like to move their headquarters to remote islands to avoid investigation.
