Policy emphasis on Hakka teenagers, says HAC head

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Future Committee Chairman of the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC) Liu Ching-Chung (劉慶中) indicated yesterday that in the future, he would not only put emphasis on teens and local cultural development but would also solidify ties between departments.

Liu visited Hualien, Fenglin and Guangfu townships in order to gain a better understanding of the quality of life in Hakka communities. He insisted that the schedule was arranged in advance without a personal announcement.

Liu said that it was a long-term goal for the HAC to cultivate as many elites as possible in Hakka culture.

"Take pop music for example," he said, "just because they are not widely accepted by teenagers, Hakka folk songs still cannot be forgotten."

Liu pointed out that to encourage Hakka teenagers to return to their hometowns to work, it is necessary to localize industry and to construct a caring society.

Liu also announced that so far local governments have not established Hakka centers around Taiwan. Therefore, to solidify ties between departments within the HAC and to maintain relations between central and local governments, it is necessary to put emphasis on centralizing useful resources.
