Tropical storm unlikely to affect Taiwan in coming days

TAIPEI--A tropical depression that formed near the Pacific island of Guam developed into Tropical Storm Halong Tuesday, becoming the 11th named storm of 2014, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said that day.

Halong, located 3,000 km east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi as of Tuesday afternoon, is expected to move toward the seas off southern Japan and will not influence Taiwan's weather in the next few days, CWB forecasters said.

Forecasters in various other countries were mixed in their forecasts as to whether the tropical storm will influence Taiwan, saying that the situation will only be clearer once its path has been established.

Meanwhile, another tropical depression formed that same afternoon east of the Philippines is likely to develop into the 12th named storm of the year — Nakri — later Tuesday or Wednesday and move toward Taiwan's northeastern tip and Okinawa.

From Wednesday to Sunday, unstable weather conditions are expected due to the influence of the tropical depression. Northern and eastern Taiwan are expected to see occasional showers Wednesday and Thursday, while intermittent showers are likely across all parts of the island from Friday through Sunday as the tropical depression comes closer.
