Chang, Sun ascend to Control Yuan posts

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Legislative Yuan yesterday approved Chang Po-ya (張博雅) and Sun Ta-chuan (孫大川) as president and vice president respectively of the Control Yuan.
According to information obtained from the Legislature, Chang graduated with a doctorate in medicine from Kyorin University (杏林大學) in Japan and has served as a lawmaker, mayor of Chiayi City, head of the Department of Health, interior minister, and is currently the chairwoman of the Central Election Commission.
According to the Additional Articles of the R.O.C. Constitution (中華民國憲法增修條文), the Control Yuan shall have 29 members, two of whom are to serve as president and vice president for six-year terms. The president of the Control Yuan is to be nominated by the head of state and has to secure consent from the Legislative Yuan in order to assume the post.
According to the Law Governing the Legislative Yuan's Power (立法院職權行使法), the nominee for Control Yuan president is to be approved by more than half of the Legislature via secret ballot.
According to information provided by the Legislative Yuan, Sun graduated with a master's degree in sinology from the University of Leuven in Belgium. He has served as the head of the Indigenous People's Council and is currently a national policy advisor to the president.
The Legislature has 112 lawmakers, which means that nominees need to secure more than 57 votes. Chang and Sun got 57 and 60 votes respectively.
