TAIPEI -- The sunny skies Taiwan has seen lately could give way to rain from late Wednesday due to the influence of an approaching tropical depression, the Central Weather Bureau said Monday.
The depression, located 1,600 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi as of Monday afternoon, could bring showers to northern and eastern Taiwan, forecasters said.
Central and southern Taiwan could be less affected, with only afternoon thunderstorms, the bureau said.
Whether the depression will develop into a tropical storm, however, will depend on the strength of the high pressure system over the Pacific, it said.
The rainy weather is forecast to prevail into Aug. 3, the bureau said.
Meanwhile, another tropical depression formed Monday afternoon east of the Philippines, according to the bureau.
That depression remained 3,400 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi and is not likely to affect Taiwan in the near future, the bureau said.
