Analog IC shipments likely lead overall growth

TAIPEI--The growth in shipments of analog integrated circuits is expected to beat the growth of the broader semiconductor market between 2013 and 2018, a market research report said Saturday.

In the report, market information advisory firm IC Insights said analog IC shipments between 2013 and 2018 are likely to grow at an average annual rate of 8.9 percent, beating a 7.2 percent increase expected for the IC sector as a whole.

IC Insights said demand for medical/health electronics, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and green energy management for residential and commercial property will serve as an engine of analog IC growth.

Over the six-year period, shipments of microcomponents are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6.6 percent, shipments of MOS (metal-oxide semiconductor) logic ICs will grow 4.6 percent, and shipments of memory chips are likely to grow 4.4 percent, IC Insights said.

In 2013, analog IC shipments exceeded 100 billion units, up 15 percent from a year earlier, and accounted for 52 percent of total IC shipments. In 2010, analog ICs made up 49 percent of total IC shipments, up from 46 percent recorded in 2000, 40 percent in 1990 and 32 percent in 1980.
