The Pingtung County Police Bureau (PCPB) yesterday revealed details of a double-homicide/suicide in Checheng, Pingtung.
According to the PCPB, the perpetrator, surnamed Lin, murdered his former girlfriend, surnamed Chuang, and her new boyfriend, surnamed Chiang. The crime was committed at dawn yesterday, and ended with Lin's suicide.
The PCPB said locals found Lin, a 57-year-old with a history of drug abuse, lying on the ground at Hsiang Tian Zhong Road at 5 a.m. yesterday. The police said they found a bullet hole in the back of his head, as well as a customized pistol and a bullet casing on the ground. Lin was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital.
According to the PCPB, since Lin was a person of criminal interest, the authorities were prompted to investigate the premise owned by the 34-year-old Chuang, with a hunch that she was in danger given the nature of her former boyfriend.
By the time local police arrived, the PCPB said, Chuang and Chiang's bodies had already gone cold. Authorities later estimated their time of death to be around 1 to 2 a.m.
The PCPB said that a bullet went straight through Chuang's head while Chiang took a bullet in the back of his left ear, with both shots reported to have been fired point blank.
Police later questioned Chuang's middle school-aged daughter who lived in the same house as to whether she had heard gunshots. Following the girl's negative reply, police reportedly deduced that the heavy rain from 1 to 2 a.m. probably covered up the sound of the gunshots.
Chuang had broken up with Lin a month previously, the PCPB pointed out, and had been selling food near Fuan Temple while starting a new relationship with Chiang, who like Lin had a history of drug-related criminal activity.
The PCPB said Lin probably murdered the couple and then committed suicide as a result of his unsettled feelings of resentment.
