Lanyu records 154 mm of rain within 24-hour period

TAIPEI -- Lanyu, an island off Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, has received 154 milimeters of rain over the past 24 hours as Typhoon Matmo approaches, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.

The rainfall on Green Island, also off Taitung County, has reached 97 mm, weathermen at the bureau said, noting that strong winds were already blowing on the two islets in the Pacific Ocean.

The bureau said Matmo is very likely to make landfall in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan in the early hours of Wednesday. However, there is a possibility that the storm would come ashore in the Taitung area, the CWB said.

At 4 p.m., the bureau lowered its rainfall prediction for northern Taiwan from 600 mm to 500 mm in the period from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Wednesday and forecast that areas from Changhua to Pingtung will record 300 mm in the 24-hour period.
