Woman missing five days found dead in a vehicle

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A 70-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease was found dead in a car yesterday, five days after she had gone missing, police in Taipei said.

The woman probably got into the car thinking it was her son's after eating with him at a noodle restaurant in the Wanhua district on July 12, police said, adding she probably died of suffocation in the vehicle that had been baking in the sun for days.

The vehicle belongs to a pre-owned car dealer. The owner said the car, parked near the restaurant, was locked except for the broken left back door. He said he came to wash the car yesterday morning but did not notice there was someone inside.

The woman's son left her at the restaurant to collect his car. When he returned to pick her up, she was nowhere to be found.

The restaurant owner discovered her body after smelling a stench coming from the car, police said.
