TAIPEI -- Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the country's main gateway, was named the 18th best airport worldwide in the World Airport Awards on Wednesday, up six places from last year.
It was the airport's best performance in the annual awards, following its rankings of 24th and 29th in the past two years, respectively, according to Taoyuan International Airport Co., which operates the airport.
The improved ranking could be attributed to the completed renovation of the airport's Terminal 1 and smooth progress of a project to improve the restrooms, the company said.
In the sub-categories, the airport was ranked No. 10 in Asia and No. 4 among airports that handle 30 million-40 million passengers annually.
In terms of service, the Taoyuan airport received a global rating of 10th for security processing, third for immigration clearance, and ninth in the categories of luggage delivery and transit convenience. Among Asian airports, it was rated the sixth-best in terms of overall staff service.
Changi Airport in Singapore, meanwhile, was voted by travelers as the world's best airport for the second year in a row.
The awards were based on 12.85 million customer nominations by 110 nationalities of air travelers, and included 410 airports worldwide.
The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product -- from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.
