Tenth typhoon could form today: CWB

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday that there have been reports of a tropical depression southwest of Guam that could become the tenth typhoon of this year.

The CWB said that Taiwan will not be affected for the next two or three days because the tropical depression is 2,000 kilometers away.

Chen Yi-liang (陳怡良), section chief of the CWB, pointed out that the tropical depression might form the tenth typhoon — to be named Matso — this year.

Chen also said the CWB is unable to tell if the typhoon might possibly hit Taiwan, or even if the tropical depression is near Taiwan's coastal areas. According to Chen, the CWB will continue to monitor the development of the tropical depression.

As a reminder, Chen said that people from Central and Northern Taiwan need to be extra careful of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and heatstroke, because Northern Taiwan could reach 36 to 37 degrees Celsius at high noon.

Beware of UV Radiation

The Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network report of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed that dangerous levels of UV radiation were present in Northern Taiwan, Hsinchu, Miaoli County, Hualien County and Taitung County.

The report suggested that UV radiation is deemed excessive at the eight to ten level, with a risk of getting sunburn after 20 minutes under the sun. UV radiation above level 11 is deemed dangerous, with a risk of getting sunburn in only 15 minutes.

According to the report, UV radiation level in Yilan, Central Taiwan, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Nantou City, Kaohsiung and Pingtung city detected yesterday was level ten. The UV radiation level in Northern Taiwan was 11, based on the report, and the UV radiation level in Hsinchu, Miaoli County, Hualien and Pingtung County reached 12.

The EPA reminded civilians to reduce the number of times they go outdoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and also to put on sunscreen, sunhats, sunglasses and use umbrellas to prevent heatstroke.
