Deputy speaker says people 'afraid' of becoming education minister

Legislative Yuan Deputy Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) yesterday expressed concern that no one would be willing to take on the post of education minister, considering the challenges that the Ministry of Education is currently facing.

Hung described former Education Minister Chiang Wei-ling (蔣偉寧) as a very responsible person, adding that the social climate of Taiwan has become too "politicized," leading to zero tolerance of mistakes.

Hung expressed sorrow over Chiang's resignation, saying that the administration lost a good minister.

Following Chiang's exit, Deputy Education Minister Chen Der-hua (陳德華) was appointed acting minister. Chen, however, told the press that he is "unsuitable" for the office, adding that he would decline a formal appointment.

When asked about possible candidates, Hung, tongue in cheek, said, "Definitely not me."

The deputy speaker added that a lot of people are "afraid" of assuming the post, adding, however, that sooner or later someone will have to step up to the plate.

Hopefully the person who does step up to the plate is someone that will not fold under pressure, who will be brave in defending the administration's policies and have the chutzpah to shoulder major tasks, Hung said.
