TRTC's new change top-up machines a success

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) yesterday reported that the newly installed change top-up machines for EasyCards have been very well received by commuters, with the NT$1 coin as the most frequently used change when accessing the machines.

The machines were officially installed in 120 Automatic Ticket Issuing Machines in 62 MRT stations on the Tamsui, Xindian, Zhonghe and Wenhu Lines on July 11. Since the machines became available, TRTC has reported extensive use by commuters, receiving a total of 27,802 coins from July 11 to the end of July 13.

Reportedly, passenger reviews of the service are generally positive, with commuters often commenting that the machines are helpful in getting rid of heavy coins and extra weight. Certain individuals have reportedly said that the feeling of topping up with coins could be easily compared to saving up money in their childhood piggy banks, which brings joy to the otherwise stressful day of daily commuters.

Statistics have also shown that the total amount top-ups from the recorded 15,031 uses has accumulated up to NT$2,250,883, averaging NT$150 per exchange. The TRTC has also stated that not only do the new machines accept coins of all denominations, but they also take all available bills in the Taiwanese currency including the NT$200 and NT$2,000 notes.

The TRTC has also reported that except for stations on the recently opened Xinyi Line and the soon-to-be-operational Songshan Line, all other Metro stations will have a change top-up machine installed by the end of the year. The company has also reported that not only could the service encourage a rise in single-trip ticket purchases, they also hope that it can aid the government's upcoming programs that feature proper coin use for the sake of the environment.
