TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan Sports Lottery has generated NT$2.4 billion (US$80.13 million) in sales from the 2014 FIFA World Cup that concluded early Monday, the company said.
The total sales from the World Cup this year were around three times as much as the last World Cup four years ago, according to the company.
The final between Germany and Argentina early Monday alone brought in sales of NT$430 million, the highest level for a single match among the 64 games played, it said.
While near 70 percent of bettors wagered rightly on a German victory, they did not win as the team failed to beat Argentina in regular time. The biggest winners were the estimated ten percent of bettors who put their money on a draw by the end of regular time.
The Taiwan Sports Lottery plans to inject NT$240 million into a sports development fund and for charity, it said.
