Taipei temperature hits year's high of 37.8 degrees

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The temperature in Taipei set a new high for this year when the mercury hit 37.8 degrees Celsius at 12:15 p.m. Sunday due to a strong high-pressure system over the Pacific, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The previous record of 37.6 degrees was set on July 9.

In neighboring New Taipei's Banqiao District and northern Keelung City, temperatures soared to 36.6 degrees and it reached 36.5 degrees in Chiayi, Southern Taiwan, around noon, the bureau said.

Warm southwesterly winds affecting the country were another reason for the high temperatures, according to the bureau.

The CWB had forecast mostly sunny and hot weather across Taiwan on Sunday. The bureau cautioned people in Southeast Taiwan to be aware of hot and dry Foehn winds on Monday.

Meanwhile, southwesterly winds could bring intermittent rain to Northern, Northeastern and Eastern Taiwan from Sunday to Tuesday, the bureau said.

The effects of tropical storm Rammasun, which formed Saturday in waters east of the Philippines, are expected to reach Taiwan by Wednesday, bringing rain to the eastern and southern parts of the country.

As of 8 a.m. Sunday, the storm was centered about 2,000 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a westerly direction at a speed of 23 km per hour, the bureau said.

The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 64.8 kph, with gusts of up to 90 kph.
