80% of Chinese medicine from mainland contains aphrodisiacs: FDA

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- About 80 percent of Chinese medicine from mainland China that was discovered to have Western pharmaceutical ingredients contained aphrodisiacs, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced recently.

The FDA yesterday published the statistics of the Chinese medicine samples collected by local health bureaus and other authorities from 2010 to 2013.

According to the FDA, among the 5,125 samples, 1,097 samples of Chinese medicine were tested and found to contain Western medicine ingredients.

FDA inspection chief Chen Hui-fang (陳惠芳) said that 91.7 percent of the Chinese medicine samples that failed the inspections were collected from local Chinese medicine centers or unknown sources.

Chen said that of all Chinese medicine samples that were tested to contain Western medicinal ingredients, 86 percent contained aphrodisiac ingredients like Sildenafil and Tadalafil.

According to Chen, Chinese medicines that contain aphrodisiac ingredients usually have descriptions related to male impotence printed on their packages.

“People should seek for help from professional doctors regarding any health issues instead of purchasing medicines that come from unknown sources,” said Chen. “Patients who have cardiovascular diseases will be at risk of suffering from low blood pressure and blurred vision if they consume aphrodisiacs that contain ingredients like Sildenafil.”

Chen said that pain killers, stimulants and diuretics are also common ingredients discovered in the Chinese medicines that failed inspections.

According to the FDA, Chinese medicine is usually made based via traditional prescriptions with natural ingredients. However, if Chinese medicines are tested to contain Western medicinal ingredients, it is a violation of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act.

The FDA also said that those who manufacture or sell medicines without permission will be punished based on Pharmaceutical Affairs Act.
