Meng family denies being financially well-off

The husband of a woman who gave birth to a preterm infant in South Korea yesterday rejected claims that he and his wife are well-off.

The couple, surnamed Meng, traveled to South Korea in February, and the wife, who was seven months pregnant at the time, had an accident which led to the premature birth of her daughter.

The medical bill came to a total of approximately NT$4 million, which the couple said that they couldn't pay. After hearing about their situation, South Korean celebrity Lee Young-ae (李英愛) generously donated NT$3 million to the couple, to help them with the medical costs and help them get back to Taiwan.

Rumors, however, surfaced yesterday, claiming that the Meng family is actually relatively well-off.

The husband told the press that his is a middle-income family.

Netizens posted messages on an Internet column, saying that Meng had previously spent NT$26,000 on concert tickets to go and see Lady Gaga, and that they had also spent NT$8,000 on daily supplies.

The husband told the CNA that his is a middle-class, middle-income family, which leads a normal life and wishes for no drama. He also said that he will not sue the netizens for spreading disinformation and that his family has nothing to hide.

The husband explained that he has a monthly salary of NT$40,000, and that his wife earns NT$10,000 a month by selling clothes.

The man admitted to buying the concert tickets and spending NT$8,000 on daily supplies, explaining, however, that he bought the tickets to cheer his wife up and that the NT$8,000 for daily supplies was split between seven people.

The couple said that they are very grateful to have received financial help from others. They also said that will save up to pay back Lee and others for the donations.
