Typhoon Neoguri moves away, still affects Taiwan

TAIPEI--Taiwan will continue to experience downpours from southwestern winds created by Typhoon Neoguri, which passed over waters east of Taiwan without causing it serious damage, the Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday.

Residents in central and Southern Taiwan should be ready for even heavier rainfall Wednesday than was seen the previous day, while northern and eastern parts of the country could see afternoon thunderstorms, the bureau said.

Forecasters said the southwestern winds could also bring Foehn winds — the warm and dry winds that blow down the sheltered side of mountains into valleys — to Taiwan.

Although the typhoon has moved away from Taiwan, chances are high that coastal areas will experience strong gusts of up to 89 kilometers per hour, the bureau said, and it warned against engaging in water activities in those regions.
