Rotary International has first Taiwanese president

Gary Huang (黃其光) is a name that not everyone is familiar with. However, from this point onward, it is a name that people will not only remember but also respect. Huang was recently elected as the President of Rotary International for 2014 to 2015, which makes him the first Taiwanese person chosen for this position. He will lead Rotary members from 168 countries and be in charge of over 34,000 global Rotary events starting from this year.

Huang, who is 70 years old, was the President of Shin Kong Security (新光保全), Royal Host Taiwan and Taiwan Pelican Express Co. Even with all this business experience, for Huang, the part of his career that he is most proud of is what he has done for and with Rotary International.

"No one is born to have the ambition or vision to join Rotary," Huang joked. "For me, people's success cannot be solely determined by how much money they can make or how important their jobs are. It is about how much they do for the society or for the nation."

When Huang was 31 years old, he applied to join Rotary International for the first time, but his application was turned down because he was too young. He applied on two more occasions but Rotary still gave him the same answers.

Huang spent nine months actively participating in Rotary events, which eventually led to the opportunity for him to join.

"I did not have much when I was 31, but I did have plenty of time," said Huang.

"The ultimate goal of being a Rotary member is to provide services to as many people as we can, and in order to achieve this goal, we have to get to know people from different fields and work with them to serve more people in need," said Huang.

For Huang, it is important that he never limit what he can do to help his friends or limit what he is capable of doing, even if those are things that might require a great amount of time and effort.
