Neoguri may become strong typhoon, unlikely to hit ROC

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Typhoon Neoguri is likely to gain strength, but the chances of it directly hitting Taiwan remains slim, forecasters said yesterday.

Neoguri was 1,830 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Oluanpi moving west-northwest at 22 kilometers per hour as of 2 p.m. yesterday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

It could become a strong typhoon in the next 24 hours before reaching the Ryukyu Islands, the CWB said.

Neoguri is heading for Japan although its course has shifted slightly westward compared to the one originally predicted, the CWB said.

The shift will increase the chance of its peripheral cloud system bringing strong waves and rains to Taiwan, but the typhoon is unlikely to have a direct impact on the island, the CWB added.

Northeast and northern regions, as well as the Hengchun Peninsula in the south and outlying islands should see strong waves tomorrow and on Tuesday, the CWB said.

Occasional showers are expected in Eastern Taiwan tomorrow, with western regions likely to see afternoon thundershowers, the CWB said, adding occasional showers are expected island-wide on Tuesday.
