Taipei mayoral hopefuls attend Independence Day event

Two Taipei mayoral hopefuls, ruling Kuomintang (KMT) nominated Sean Lien (連勝文) and opposition Democratic Progressive Party- (DPP) backed Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) yesterday both showed up as special guests at a U.S. Independence Day celebration in Taipei.

Participating in a 238th U.S. Independence Day celebration in Taipei, Lien and Ko showed up at the event organized by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). The AIT represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of official ties.

The two shook hands and greeted each other briefly before entering the event venue.

Speaking to media upon his arrival at the event venue, Ko, who normally wears casual clothing, wore a formal suit. Ko said this is the first time in 20 years that he wore a suit.

"Taiwan is too hot for suits," Ko said, adding that he chose to wear formal clothing to attend the celebration for the sake of Taiwan's diplomacy. Lien, however, did not make a comment when approached by media.
