Taipei's temps hit year's high at nearly 37 degrees

TAIPEI -- The temperature in Taipei set a new high for the year yesterday when the mercury hit 36.8 degrees Celsius due to a strong high pressure system over the Pacific, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

The scorching reading was recorded at 1:13 p.m.

In neighboring New Taipei's Banqiao District, a year's high of 35.1 degrees was also seen around noon, the bureau said.

The hot weather is likely to last into Thursday, forecasters said, adding that Dawu Township in the southeastern county of Taitung could see temperatures rise even higher due to Feohn winds, the warm and dry winds that blow down the sheltered side of mountains into valleys.

Temperatures could drop slightly from Friday, however, thanks to increasing chances of afternoon thunderstorms, according to the bureau.
