Aboriginal culture to lure Chinese tourists: bureau

TAIPEI -- Taiwan is hoping to capitalize on its diverse cultures to attract Chinese tourists through more indigenous culture themed travel packages, the Tourism Bureau said.

Chinese tourists, especially those who travel without being part of a tour group or accompanied by a tour guide, have shown increasing interest in more in-depth tourism, bureau head David Hsieh said Tuesday.

The bureau has therefore stepped up efforts to work with the Council of Indigenous Peoples to involve local tribes in tailored itineraries for Chinese tourists, Hsieh said.

"I believe that tribal tourism will become the centerpiece of in-depth travel in Taiwan," he said.

As part of its latest efforts, Hsieh said, the bureau recently invited representatives from 16 travel agencies in Shanghai to tour tribal villages in eastern Taiwan, including Sibilian, Pisilian and Bulaubulau.

During a week-long visit in late June, the representatives explored scenic spots, experienced traditional cultures and held discussions with tribal leaders about possible cooperative models, Hsieh said.
