CIB arrests three after seizing 8 kg heroin

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) announced the arrest of three suspects on June 25 for allegedly smuggling eight kilograms of heroin from Southeast Asian countries to Taiwan.

An ad hoc investigative team consisting of police authorities from Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taoyuan cracked down the alleged drug smuggling activity at a southern Kaohsiung Harbor, the CIB said in a released statement.

During the raid, police apprehended three suspects surnamed Chuang (莊), Yeh (葉), and Huang (黃), who were allegedly involved in the trafficking deal.

The operation also confiscated eight kilograms of heroine and 8.4 kilograms of amphetamine, with a combined estimated street value of NT$68 million, the CIB said.

The CIB said investigations into the case began in late 2013 after police authorities received tips about the alleged drug smuggling operation headed by Chuang.

The drug smuggling ring allegedly made use of cross-border smuggling operations between Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Laos and Thailand.

The ring would smuggle narcotics from several Southeast Asian countries into Taiwan disguised as imported goods, the CIB said.

The case was solved with the assistance of police authorities in China and Hong Kong, which helped Taiwan track down and trace the smuggling suspects, it added.
