International students may apply for work in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starting today, international students in Taiwan may apply for work permits in Taiwan, the Ministry of Labor (MOL) said, adding that there a total of 2,000 spots available in the first year.

The MOL is partnering with the Executive Yuan, which launched a designated program to retain foreign talent in Taiwan. The selection of foreign students will be made based on eight criteria: educational degree, salary level, work experience, job qualification, Chinese skills, foreign language skills, life experience, and industry of participation.

Foreign students who have graduated from a Taiwan-based university will be eligible to apply. A total of 2,000 spots are available in the first year of the program's implementation.

As the government has invested plenty of resources in educating foreign students studying in Taiwan, it is only rational to retain talent that may enhance the nation's competitiveness, the MOL said.

Explanation of the selection process, the criteria and related application forms are available online at www.wda.gov.tw. The MOL pointed out that applicants also need to submit required documents such as copies of diplomas, work contract, resumes and proof of language proficiency.

According to local sources, the National Development Council (NDC) proposed a “new immigration policy” to the Cabinet in February, and relaxing rules to allow more foreign students to work in Taiwan is but “one small dish” to retain talent. Other “entrees” include measures to retain technical professionals and grant them dual citizenship, a measure which is still under deliberation.
