Wanted fraud suspect to be deported from China: CIB

A fraud suspect who has been on Taiwan's wanted list since 2009 was recently sent back from China to Taiwan to face criminal charges, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, 刑事局.)

The suspect, surnamed Wu (吳), was indicted on fraud charges in 2009. According to prosecutors, he pretended to be a qualified lawyer even though he did not pass the bar exam. He scammed a number of victims into paying him to deal with legal cases, with late veteran Taiwanese singer Frankie Kao (高凌風) among the victims.

Wu was also facing embezzlement charges on a separate case.

Instead of facing legal consequences in Taiwan, Wu fled to China. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office put him on the wanted list in October 2009.

Wu was recently arrested in Xiamen, China under the Cross-strait Joint Fight against Crime and Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement (兩岸共同打擊犯罪協議), the CIB said.

The suspect was repatriated back to Taiwan from Xiamen on June 18 in the company of CIB agents and Taiwan's Immigration Bureau staff, it noted.
