Young professionals from Americas in Taiwan exchange

TAIPEI--A group of young professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean are visiting Taiwan on an exchange program aimed at increasing their familiarity with the country and promoting bilateral business opportunities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

Their 10-day program, which will conclude June 30, will give the 19 participants an opportunity to travel around Taiwan to learn more about its economic development, the ministry said.

"Despite the geographic distance between Taiwan and Latin America and the Caribbean, (all) sides have conducted close exchanges in political, economic, social, technology, science, cultural and academic fields over the years," said Richard Shih, secretary-general of the Foreign Ministry, at the opening ceremony of the Latin American and Caribbean Young Business Leaders' Camp.

Marie Christine Boncy, a participant from Haiti, said she is confident that the camp will provide a positive trip that promotes both business and friendship between her country and Taiwan.

Participants in the program are scheduled to visit the National Development Council and the Bureau of Foreign Trade and will hear a presentation on Taiwan's bid to enter the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Foreign Ministry said.

Three business meetings will be held separately in northern, central and southern Taiwan, for participants to meet with local industry representatives to explore business opportunities, the ministry said.

Now in its second year, the camp is aimed at promoting business opportunities between Taiwan and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as showcasing Taiwan's efforts and determination in trade liberalization as it seeks support for its TPP bid.

Represented in the group are young professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, El Salvador, Saint Lucia and Honduras among others, according to the ministry.

Taiwan has repeatedly expressed its desire to join the TPP, a trade bloc in the Asia-Pacific region currently being negotiated by the United States, Japan, Australia, Peru, Malaysia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Chile, Singapore, Canada, Mexico and Brunei.
