Local university students prepare to embark on 1-year hospitality internship in Singapore

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Up to 30 hospitality students from Meiho University are going to Singapore this month for a one-year paid internship program at three international chain hotels.

It is the fifth year that the university has sponsored the overseas internship program. The number of participating students has been growing every year. The internship was offered to only 15 students last year.

The 30 senior students were selected from around 100 candidates. They will be led by faculty to the Four Seasons Hotel, the Hilton Hotel, Park Avenue Hotels and Suites, and the Jumbo Group in Singapore. They may be formally employed by the hotels in the future, according to their professors.

Students' wages differ from hotel to hotel. They range between NT$29,000 and NT$33,000 in the first three months. The wage may rise to NT$36,000 afterwards, said a professor from the school.

To better prepare students, Meiho University also set up an overseas practice club that helps students hone their English skills and acquaint them with Singapore's culture.

Most students welcome the internship opportunity, as it provides for a different life experience. Through preparation for this oversea trip, students also get to improve their language, leadership, communication and organizational skills.
