More students build skills through internships over '13 academic year

TAIPEI -- More students took part in internships over the 2013 academic year, the Education Ministry announced Tuesday, touting the advancement as a step toward to closing the gap between school learning and workplace expectations.

The school year saw 60,374 students earning practical experience outside of classes, or 1.12 times the number in the previous year, the ministry said.

Among the students, 29 percent did internships or other training over summer break, while another 20 percent did so during the school year.

The statistics also showed that in the 2012 academic year, nearly 83 percent of students in internships secured jobs in related sectors after graduation.

The ministry's Department of Technological and Vocational Education published the data at a presentation of the results of a government push to increase industrial and academic cooperation.

Student representatives at the event shared their experiences, including Tu Yu-jung, a graduating student in the Department of Media Art at Kang Ning Junior College of Medical Care and Management.

Tu said she has already been offered a full-time position at the major multimedia company where she interned before graduation.

She said that during her training at Pili International Media Co., known for its action-based budaixi glove puppet series, she learned a lot that she would not have from just her schoolwork, including how to craft some of the accessories used by the puppets in the shows.

Exposure to an office environment also helped her learn how to get along with coworkers and gave her a head start in her career, Tu said.
