Man defrauded of labor insurance money

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man in Kaohsiung surnamed Yang recently discovered that NT$470,000 had been withdrawn from his labor insurance account without his knowledge or consent.

Despite not having retired, Yang's employers received notice from the Bureau of Labor Insurance saying that Yang's old-age benefits, totaling NT$470,000, had been withdrawn in one lump sum.

Yang subsequently asked the bureau to go through its records and discovered that the address and phone number listed in the database were false, raising suspicions of gross neglect on the bureau's part.

In response, officials at the bureau said that the case had been transferred over to prosecutors for further investigation, and that the bureau will work toward preventing similar incidents from happening in the future.

Yang explained that he has worked continuously for his company for more than a decade, and that the accountants at his company had received notice from the bureau, saying that he had left the job and withdrawn the money in his labor insurance account.
