US youths begin three-week exchange program in Taiwan

TAIPEI--A group of students and young professionals from the United States gathered in Taipei Monday, expressing optimism and excitement over a three-week exchange program that kicked off that day.

The participants of Mosaic Taiwan, which runs from June 15 to July 5, will take part in team-building and leadership-development exercises as well as workshops and lectures on topics involving Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which sponsors the program.

At the opening ceremony for the program, participant Samuel Galler gave a greeting in Chinese and said that he was glad to join the program on behalf of his hometown of Boston.

Currently studying international development at Oxford University with a focus on civil society in China, Galler said he was looking forward to a very “exciting” three weeks during his first visit to Taiwan.

Melissa Newcomb, who graduated from the School of International Service at the American University, said it was great to be in Taipei and that she is “going to do a lot of things that she has never done before” on this visit.

Stanley Seiden, a graduate of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, introduced himself with the Chinese name of Xi Dan and said he is very excited to become a member of the fellowship exchange program during his second visit to Taiwan.
