Media is making up stories about my future plans: Chu

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The media was "making up stories" in their latest reports on his future political aspirations, New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) said yesterday.

"I have read three news articles about my future plans today, another seven or eight similar stories have been reported over the past few days," Chu told reporters while attending a press event yesterday in Banqiao District.

Many of these stories contradict each other and some of them talk about things that he himself has never heard of, Chu noted.

Stressing that local media have been "making up stories" for quite some time, the New Taipei mayor remained tight-lipped about his future aspirations and particularly whether or not he would seek re-election or start preparing for a presidential run in 2016.

Chu made the remarks in response to the Chinese-language Apple Daily report yesterday that said President Ma Ying-jeou decided to respect Chu's decision about whether to run for re-election in New Taipei or directly pursue the presidency in 2016.

Quoting sources, the newspaper said Ma's close aide King Pu-tsung (金溥聰), head of the National Security Council, had successfully persuaded the president not to interfere in the case and fully respect Chu's decision about his future.

Asked to comment on his future plan, Chu yesterday reiterated that he will continue to focus on his municipal duties first. He will make a final decision according to the ruling Kuomintang schedule, which at the latest will be around the end of June or the beginning of July.
