TAIPEI -- The winners of the first Tang Prize, an international academic award established by Taiwanese entrepreneur Samuel Yin, will be unveiled on June 18-21,
The winners are selected by Academia Sinica, Taiwan's highest academic institution.
Inspired by the Nobel Prize and established in December 2012, the Tang Prize aims to supplement the Nobel Prize by honoring top researchers in four fields that it deems critical in the 21st century.
The first laureates in the category of “sustainable development” will be announced on June 18, followed by “biopharmaceutical science” winners on June 19, “sinology” winners on June 20 and “rule of law” winners on June 21.
Up to three winners in each category will share a cash prize of NT$50 million (US$1.66 million). The award ceremony will take place on Sept. 18.
Academia Sinica President Wong Chi-huey told CNA in a recent interview that the Tang Prize will allow the world to catch sight of Taiwan and demonstrate the country's ability to lead international research.
