Inclement weather forecast for entire weekend: CWB

TAIPEI--A developing tropical depression could bring downpours to most of Taiwan over the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday.

It remains unclear whether the depression around the Dongsha Islands southwest of Taiwan could develop into a tropical storm, but the abundant moisture it introduces is expected to cause rainy weather through Monday, forecasters said.

The bureau has issued a heavy rain warning for central, southern and southeastern Taiwan, cautioning rainfall of over 130 millimeters over a 24 hour period is possible in Taitung County and southern Pingtung County.

Daytime low temperatures could hover between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country. Highs are expected at 29-30 degrees in northern Taiwan, 31-32 degrees in central Taiwan, and 32-33 degrees in southern Taiwan, according to forecasters.

The inclement weather could ease up from Tuesday, but rain ranging from occasional showers to thunderstorms will continue across the country, the bureau said.

As Taiwan heads into typhoon season, Cheng Ming-dean, director of the bureau's Weather Forecast Center, noted that tropical storms this summer are expected to develop farther from Taiwan, which means they could gain strength as they head toward the country.
