MAC happy to help Zhang arrange meeting with DPP

Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Wang Yu-chi (王郁琦) said yesterday that if the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would like to meet Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) Minister Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), his council would be happy to help arrange a meeting.

Wang said that Zhang's itinerary will soon be finalized, but that so far the DPP has not expressed an interest in meeting the TAO minister.

Zhang is slated to visit during the week starting from June 23, Wang said, adding that the TAO delegation will meet with his council to discuss the development of cross-strait ties, economic cooperation, regional economic integration and the progress on establishing reciprocal representative offices.

The TAO delegation would like to visit the cities of New Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung and meet with the heads of those local governments, Wang explained.

The MAC believes that more direct contact with publicly elected officials on a local level in Taiwan is a good thing for the TAO, and it will help make the arrangements, Wang said.

In response to the TAO's remarks that all issues involving Chinese sovereignty and the completeness of Chinese territory must be decided by people on both sides of the strait, Wang said that the MAC released a response immediately after the TAO made the remarks, reiterating that the people of Taiwan cannot accept such a statement.

Cross-strait interaction should be based on equality, and hopefully the TAO can better understand the will of the Taiwan public, the minister said.
