Torrential rain expected across southern Taiwan

TAIPEI -- Residents of Southern Taiwan were warned to expect heavy rains Monday, with the southernmost county of Pingtung in particular expected to see more than 200 millimeters of rainfall over 24 hours.

The Central Weather Bureau issued a heavy rain warning to Pingtung and areas of southern Hualien, Taitung and Yunlin counties and mountainous areas of north and central Taiwan due to a southward-moving plum rain front.

Residents in affected areas can expect sudden downpours, lightning storms and strong winds, forecasters said, cautioning that continuous rain might cause mudslides, flooding and falling rocks.

The inclement weather will likely last throughout the week, especially in central, southern and southeastern parts of the country, the bureau said.

Daytime temperatures are meanwhile expected to stay at current levels, with highs forecast at 29-30 degrees Celsius in the north, 31-34 degrees in Central and Southern Taiwan, and 30-31 degrees in the east, the bureau said.

Lows are forecast at between 24 and 25 degrees island-wide, it said.
