Heavy rain forecast to pound Taiwan: CWB

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starting on Tuesday, substantial moisture is expected to move into Taiwan, and heavy rainfall may occur in Central, Southern and Southeast Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.

Affected by a stationary front, showers and thundershowers may occur all over Taiwan today, brief rainfall and thundershowers may occur on the East Coast and outer islands such as Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu islands, the CWB said.

Residents should brave for another week of unstable weather, the CWB said. The stationary front is expected to move southward starting on Monday, moving more of rainfalls southward.

However, the CWB forecast moisture from the South China Sea to move in starting Tuesday, increasing rainfalls all over Taiwan, especially in Central, Southern and Southeast Taiwan.

The CWB said the weather front is expected to affect Taiwan until June 13 at the very least. The bureau expects little change in temperatures, with 30 and 32 degree Celsius as the highs and 24 to 25 degree Celsius in the lows.

'Planetary Scale'

We are now entering the "mature stage" of the rainy season, said Wu Te-jung (吳德榮), Associate Professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University.

The southwesterly flow has expanded to over 4,000 kilometers to reach the "planetary scale," Wu said. The flow is likely to stay in the sea off Southern Taiwan for a couple of weeks.

CWB's chief meteorologist Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典) said the southwesterly flow contains much moisture and may bring heavy rainfall to Taiwan before June 11.
